McKenzie and Willis Facade

181 High Street

The scaffolding is down and the McKenzie and Willis facade is back on the central Christchurch landscape.

Restoration of the ornate facade formed part of 181 High Limited developer Richard Peebles' $50 million project on the corner of Tuam and High streets.

A new building has been constructed behind the facade and tied to it. Detailed stonework was repaired and recreated, windows removed for repair and the whole piece strengthened.

Peebles said saving the facade had cost about $4 million, including the about $1.3 million spent propping it up after the 2011 earthquake.

"It's looking beautiful. It's quite a 'wow'. The inside is really amazing," he said.

"It's going to be a great heritage quarter on High St."
